Sweet Providence!

Beloved,

I love the doctrine of providence. What a sweet comfort to know that our Father rules over all. There are no accidents. There are no random occurrences.

We are closing on our house tomorrow, and our realtor texted us at noon to make sure we had wired the money needed toward that end. I hadn’t factored going to the bank into my already tight schedule today. But off I went at the urgent beck of our amazing realtor!

I waited in line for some time only to be told by the teller that I would need to talk to a financial consultant who was with another client. That client ended up being Jean DeYoung’s daughter, Mary, who when she saw me, greeted me as “pastor.” That tipped off the consultant that I was a local pastor, and it led to a very interesting theological discussion, mainly focused upon the Trinity. Josh couldn’t understand how God could be both three and one. I told him, “If your little mind could fully comprehend God, He wouldn’t be God.”

Here is the amazing thing – only an hour before going to the bank, I had finished a draft of my Sunday morning sermon on the incomprehensibility of God. Josh thought he was wrestling with the Trinity, but actually his problem was wanting a god he could fit into his finite mind. I said, “You really need to come to church on Sunday because I’m going to be preaching on this very thing!” He took my card, and said he would like to come with his wife and daughter on Sunday, and he appeared to be sincerely interested.

As I drove back to the church, I was marveling at all the details that were brought together perfectly to make that conversation a reality. I didn’t have a visit to Regions Bank on my to-do list today. But praise God that He did. And praise God that He willed for Mary to be there just minutes before me. And praise God that of all the things I could be preaching on this Sunday, my message focused upon precisely what Josh needed to hear. What an awesome, sovereign God we serve!

Pray that Josh and his family would be inclined to join us in the worship of the Triune God this Sunday, and that He would come to embrace our singular God who exists equally and eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

See you Sunday!

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Nick
